Since a normal PaO2 is between 90-100 mmHg, some people may think that an O2 saturation of 90 is normal as well — after all 90 was a pretty good grade to get in school. However, this interpretation is very wrong. An O2 sat of 90% corresponds to a PaO2 of 60 mmHg.

2017-11-18 · As the pO2 approaches 100 torrs (or mmHg), the hemoglobin molecules become nearly fully saturated. Hb + 1 O2 = 25% saturation. Hb + 2 O2 = 50% saturation. Hb + 3 O2 = 75% saturation. Hb + 4 O2 = 100% saturation. The O2-Hb relationship is sigmoidal (or s-shaped) and not linear. (see the image below) The upper end of the curve is flatter than the lower end.

The hallmark of acute hypercapnic respiratory failure is elevated pCO2 due to acute retention/accumulation of carbon dioxide gas resulting in an acidic pH less than 7.35. PCO2 increases much less than the decrease in PO2 due to two reasons. First, not all O2 consumed is converted to CO2. Under normal conditions, only 80% of O2 is converted to CO2. the PO2 = 40 mmHg the hemoglobin is at 75% saturation Soyou don't really need a high PO2 (greater than 104 mmHg) in the alveolar air or in arterial blood, the hemoglobin (which is carrying most of the O2) is almost completely saturated when the PO2 is only 70 mmHg (you can see this in figure 23.19).

16.22). The actual amount of dissolved oxygen under these circumstances is not particularly important (it can be looked up in solubility tables, if desired); it is simply a linear function of the PO2. The oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve shows the relationship between the hemoglobin saturation (SO2) at different oxygen tensions (PO2). The P50 is the oxygen tension at which hemoglobin is 50% saturated. The normal P50 is 26.7 mm Hg. 1.
